Use the right water

All syrups should be made with distilled or previously boiled water. This takes out all of the impurities that could make your syrup go rancid.

MAKING A MEDICINAL SYRUP

Syrups can easily be made on demand when you have all of the ingredients, and they will fill your kitchen with sweet aromas. The beauty of making a syrup is that you can play around with the taste and texture. You can use different herbs to make a blend that attacks certain ailments.

Let’s go over a simple elderberry syrup recipe. This is a recipe I’ve been making on my own for years. In this recipe, we take advantage not only of the medicinal properties of elderberry but also astragalus root (immunity boost), ginger root (tummy soother), and clove (antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, with high amounts of antioxidants).

Dosage:

2 teaspoons once a day as a preventative

1–3 tablespoons every 3–4 hours when sick, until symptoms go away

Shelf life:

3–6 months, longer if refrigerated
